To call LUX By Rosalía a masterpiece would be a great understatement. It’s more like her induction into sainthood.
Throughout the course of LUX, Rosalía reaches across time and language (13 to be exact!) and sings about/to a myriad of historical female saints and mystics ranging all the way from Joan of Arc to St. Clare of Assisi to Rabia Al’Adawiyya to Hildegard Von Bingen to Ryōnen Gensō. She connects her own spiritual journeys to these women on songs like Reliquia, where she compares lost pieces of herself to the Catholic ritual of collecting relics, or like on De Madrugá, where she channels the divine rage and determination of St, Olga of Kiev, singing, “I do not seek revenge, revenge seeks me” in Ukrainian.
And this is all without even mentioning the PHENOMENAL vocal and musical performances across this record. Along with perfecting her operatic vocal technique, the whole album was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra (!)
I’m fortunate enough to have tickets to the LUX tour this June and have been counting down the days. To see an artist so resolute, cultivated, and self-possessed is a blessing!
